About This Quote

Antonio Gramsci was an Italian Marxist intellectual who wrote several philosophical works. He is also noted for his commitment to cultural hegemony, which he believed to be necessary for the ruling class to maintain their position.    According to this quote, Gramsci believed that violence is necessary in order to maintain social order. It does not matter whether the violence is caused by the government or by gangs on the streets.

Either way, violence is necessary in order for society to function correctly. Â   This concept of violence is very common today, especially in the form of wars. Even though some wars are not caused by government leaders, the people who fight in these wars are still caused by some form of violence.

The violence used against them causes them to fight back with even more violent actions which eventually cause more deaths.
